Short answer
Water below 24°C needs more than a 3mm wetsuit. 22°C = 5mm. 18°C = 7mm + hood. 14°C = semi-dry. Below 14°C = drysuit, no exceptions. A drysuit course costs €350–450 and adds 1–2 days. Cold water also shortens dive time, increases gas consumption, demands more conservative no-decompression limits, and changes how you communicate with thick gloves.

These are guidelines for a typical 60-minute recreational dive at 12–18m. Adjust colder if you run cold, dive longer, dive deeper, or have less body fat.

Why immersion matters more than you think

Water conducts heat 25 times faster than air. A 22°C swimming pool feels chilly after a few minutes. A 22°C breeze on land is t-shirt weather. The same number, two completely different sensations — because of the physics of heat transfer.

When you’re in water, your body loses heat through four mechanisms simultaneously:

  • Conduction — direct contact with cold water (the largest loss)
  • Convection — water flowing past you carries heat away
  • Radiation — small for water, big for skin exposed to air on the boat
  • Evaporation — only on the surface or in dry suits

The takeaway: your perception of how cold the water is when you stick a hand in at the surface is misleading. You’re feeling shock from temperature change, not the rate of heat loss that will accumulate over a 60-minute dive. The math always wins.

What the wetsuit thicknesses actually do

A neoprene wetsuit works by trapping a thin layer of water against your skin, which your body heats up. The thicker the neoprene, the better the insulation, and the slower water can flow through and replace that warm layer.

3mm wetsuit

For water above 24°C. Common in tropical destinations: Thailand, Bali, Maldives, Egypt summer, Caribbean. A 3mm full suit weighs about 1.5kg and adds about 2kg of buoyancy. You’ll wear roughly 4–5kg of weights in salt water.

Not adequate below 24°C. People do try, and they emerge shivering after 40 minutes.

5mm wetsuit

For water 20–24°C. Common in: Mediterranean summer, Red Sea winter, parts of Indonesia, Bonaire deeper dives. A 5mm full suit weighs about 2.5kg and adds 3–4kg of buoyancy. You’ll wear roughly 6–7kg in salt water.

This is the most-purchased thickness globally because it covers the widest range of recreational conditions. A 5mm with a 3mm hood and gloves extends to about 18°C if you’re warm-bodied.

7mm wetsuit

For water 16–20°C. Common in: California coast summer, UK summer, Mediterranean late autumn and early spring. A 7mm full suit weighs 3.5kg and adds 5–6kg of buoyancy. You’ll wear 8–10kg in salt water.

A 7mm is genuinely hot on the surface. Suiting up takes time. Some divers prefer a 5mm + 5mm vest combination which feels less restrictive while providing similar warmth.

Semi-dry suit

For water 12–16°C. A semi-dry is a 7mm wetsuit with sealed wrist and neck cuffs that drastically reduce water flushing through the suit. Costs about €400–600 versus €200–350 for a standard 7mm.

The semi-dry is the underused middle option. Many divers in northern Europe or California autumn underestimate it and jump straight to a drysuit, but a good semi-dry handles down to about 12°C comfortably for an hour. It also doesn’t require a separate certification.

Drysuit

For water below 14°C and the only sensible choice below 12°C. A drysuit keeps you completely dry — water never touches your skin. Underneath you wear a thermal undersuit. The combination handles water from 14°C down to ice diving in 1–2°C.

A drysuit costs €1,200–3,500 new, plus €300–500 for the undersuit. Requires the Dry Suit Diver specialty (1–2 days, €250–450). Adds buoyancy that has to be managed actively via a separate air valve.

Specific destinations and their suit requirements

Mediterranean winter — 14–17°C

December through April, the Med drops below most wetsuit thresholds. Greek islands, Croatia, southern Italy, Spanish costas, southern France, all sit in 14–17°C range from January to March.

Realistic options:

  • Drysuit — the right choice if you’ll dive winter more than once or twice
  • 7mm + thick hood + gloves — survivable for 40-minute dives in 17°C, borderline at 15°C, miserable at 14°C
  • Semi-dry — the sensible middle ground if you don’t want to commit to drysuit certification

Most year-round dive shops in the Med rent drysuits and run drysuit specialties on demand.

UK and Ireland — 8–15°C summer, 4–10°C winter

Drysuit always. Year-round drysuit. The 12°C summer “warmth” of UK seas is still too cold for any wetsuit to be sensible for recreational diving longer than 30 minutes.

UK diving is one of the world’s best-developed cold-water markets. Drysuit rental from BSAC clubs runs £25–40 per day. Drysuit Specialty courses are widely available.

Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway, Finland) — 5–12°C in season

Drysuit + thick (300g+) undersuit + dry gloves + 7mm hood. Below 8°C, dry gloves rather than wet gloves become important — wet gloves freeze numbness into fingers within 20 minutes.

Swedish dive sites (Smögen, Marstrand, Söderhamn) have water around 10–15°C in July and August, dropping to 5–8°C by November. Many Swedish divers continue diving through winter under ice — this is a separate specialty.

California — 10–15°C year-round on the central coast

Monterey, Big Sur, the Channel Islands — water sits in the 10–15°C range most of the year. Drysuit is standard. A few hardy divers use 7mm/semi-dry in summer; most regret it after the first dive.

Lake diving and quarries (Europe, US)

Inland diving (Capernwray UK, Vobster Quay UK, Silfra Iceland, various Swiss lakes, Lake Tahoe) is overwhelmingly drysuit territory. Lakes don’t stratify warm — they sit in 4–10°C even in summer at depth. Silfra (Iceland) is 2°C year-round, drysuit always.

The drysuit course in detail

The PADI Dry Suit Diver specialty is the standard introduction. Most other agencies offer equivalent courses.

Duration: 1–2 days

Cost: €250–450 in Europe, $300–500 in North America

Includes: 1 confined-water session, 2 open-water dives

You learn: Inflating and deflating the drysuit via a dedicated inflator valve, buoyancy control with the suit, handling air migration to the feet (the most common problem), emergency procedures if the suit floods or the valve sticks open.

You don’t learn: How to actually be skilled with a drysuit. That takes 20–40 dives of regular use.

Most divers finish the specialty course and need another 10 dives before drysuit feels natural. The first 5 dives are frequently buoyancy disasters — air in the wrong place sends feet up, fins flapping at the surface while head is at 6m. Persist, it stabilises.

How cold water changes dive planning

Beyond the suit choice, cold water shifts several other planning numbers.

Gas consumption rises

Cold makes you breathe harder. The same dive that uses 90 bar of a 200-bar cylinder in 28°C water uses 120 bar in 12°C water. Plan dives shorter and turn earlier on gas.

Typical surface air consumption (SAC) rate adjustment: add 15–20% in cold water versus tropical.

No-decompression limits become more conservative

Cold water reduces tissue perfusion (blood flow to muscle and joints). Less perfusion means slower nitrogen off-gassing. Most dive computers don’t compensate explicitly, but DAN and divemed recommendations are:

  • Surface 5–10 minutes earlier than the no-decompression limit suggests
  • Always do a 5-minute safety stop at 5m, not the 3-minute optional version
  • More conservative for repeat dives (longer surface intervals)
  • Conservative even for first dives at depths above 18m

Dive times shorten

Cold-water dives are typically 35–50 minutes versus tropical 60–75 minutes. The limit is rarely gas — it’s temperature tolerance. The shivering point is the practical end of the dive regardless of computer readings.

Equipment behaves differently

Regulators can free-flow in cold water. Below 10°C, environmentally-sealed (sometimes called “cold water rated”) first stages are required by most agencies and rental shops. Standard tropical regulators are not safe below about 8°C — they freeze.

A few specific cold-water regulator models: Apeks XTX series, Aqualung Legend Supreme, Scubapro Mk25 EVO. All are clearly labelled.

Hand signals adapted for thick gloves

5mm wet gloves and dry gloves both reduce finger dexterity. Hand signals modify in cold-water communities:

  • The OK signal becomes a fist-pump (gloved fingers don’t form a clean circle)
  • Numbers above 5 use both hands more often
  • Slate or wrist-mounted notepads are more common
  • Pre-dive signal review takes longer

Rental alternative: most year-round dive operators (UK clubs especially) rent the whole kit for €60–90 per day. If you’ll dive cold water fewer than 10 times per year, renting is cheaper.

What to read before going

A few specific resources worth time before your first cold-water dive:

  • PADI Dry Suit Diver manual (or SSI Dry Suit specialty) — read it twice
  • DAN cold-water diving guidelines — free online, covers physiology in plain language
  • Your specific drysuit’s manual — they vary in valve placement, inflation behaviour, and seal types
  • A YouTube channel like Alec Peirce or Divetalking — practical drysuit technique videos worth the time

Honest expectations for the first cold dive

Almost everyone who switches from tropical to cold water for the first time finds the first dive harder than expected. The cumulative effect of:

  • Heavier gear to walk in on the surface
  • More thinking required for buoyancy (drysuit + BCD + wetsuit, depending on setup)
  • Cold face shock on entry (water hitting the cheeks above the mask)
  • Reduced visibility versus tropical (often 5–10m versus 30m)
  • Different fish life (less colourful but often more interesting at close range)
  • Shorter dive feeling rushed

This passes by dive 5. By dive 15 you settle into the rhythm. By dive 30 cold-water diving feels normal and many divers prefer it to tropical — better-trained divers, less crowded sites, more diverse season-by-season conditions.

When to skip the dive

The “don’t dive today” criteria are tighter in cold water:

  • You’re already shivering on the boat — your body has nothing left to give
  • Water is below the suit’s realistic rating — 5mm in 15°C, drysuit zipper broken, gloves missing
  • Surface conditions are rough — cold + rough = exhaustion = panic risk
  • You haven’t eaten properly — calories matter more in the cold
  • You’re hungover or short on sleep — cold water has zero tolerance for impaired divers

The dive will be there tomorrow. Cold water especially rewards conservative decision-making, because the consequences of getting it wrong scale faster than in warm water.
